Welcome to the ⚒️ wild west of home improvement. Where there’s no barrier between us and disaster!

The other day I was on my way to another inspection and saw this being done. Vinyl siding should not be installed over OSB or another sheathing materials unless you have a barrier installed. Here these guys no doubt know that they should or are cutting corners.

Vinyl siding is being replaced and installed on this existing property. And t is important to remember that, when installing vinyl siding, a barrier must be installed behind it. Without this, moisture can be trapped and cause damage to the structure. This could include rotting of the wood, mold and mildew, and other issues.

It may not be code related where you are, but the manufacturer installation requirements supersedes any code. They should install a moisture barrier, such as a DuPont™ Tyvek® HomeWrap®, behind the siding to prevent moisture buildup and damage.

In conclusion, installing a moisture barrier behind vinyl siding is an important step for ensuring the property remains structurally sound. This is a clear example of why everyone should have work checked by a 3rd party inspection firm.
